FAQ|registering domain nameQuestion:

I want to create a forum site at my own domain name. The domain is registered at godaddy right now. I don’t really want to just link to a forum hosted on a “make-your-own-forum-from-a-template” site. I’d rather use software to build something completely independent and just have it hosted at godaddy (or somewhere else). I don’t have any web development experience but I’m otherwise pretty computer literate. What’s the best way to go about this?

You’re right at registering your domains at Godaddy. Godaddy is one of the best domain registrar with lowest prices and good features.

GoDaddy offers free SMF forums with their accounts I believe. SMF is very good forum software. It’s open source, and has a large selection of add ons, themes, ect. Take a look at it before you discount it.

For security purposes, the best way would be to find an open source forum built in PHP or something similar that you could tailor to what you want to do. I’d check over at SourceForge to see what’s there.

I know I’ve seen forum code before but I can’t recall the name at present.

You need to make sure the web host you go with offers php and mysql – they are needed for any (secure) forum to work.

There are a few opensource forums – the most popular being http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/index.php

You can choose from various forum engines such as vbulletin, phpbb etc. Owning a domain is not enough though. You will also need a host for your forum/site. One of the best hosts I’ve used is dreamhost. It’s cheap and has great customers service. When registering with them you can use a OMANBA promo code to get $20 discount. (don’t forget to enter the OMANBA code)

You cant go wrong with phpBB or SMF, both are free, and have great support, both can be installed on almost any hosting platform. It is easy to install (some hosts offer fantastico, and in that case install is just one click). If you need hosting, here you can find some discount codes

LIke others have said, use something that already exists and is open source. I don’t know about GoDaddy but with Hostgator you get access to a cPanel (this might be included with GoDaddy – you’d have to check). Within cPanel is an item called ‘Fantastico’ this lets you automatically install software on your website – like WordPress, Joomla, Shopping carts or forums. I know phpBB is included and a few others. You simply click on the one you want to install, fill out a few details and it does all the work for you.
If you haven’t got your hosting you could go with Hostgator (just keep the domain at GoDaddy), it’s cheap and you can use the coupon 1CentReview (which I found from here: http://hostgator-review.info ) so you can get it for $0.01 for the first month – try it out and see if it works for you :-)
Oh, and with the cPanel installs, you can install it, delete it and try something else so you can try them all and see which one you like best :-)
    Good luck with it!

In fact, that is the best route to go (hosting your own forum, rather than at the sites which allow you to create a site because the moment you want to move to your own host, you’ll find a lot of difficulties and sometimes you might even have to lose all the forum content and start over again.)

It is best to go with a forum framework (rather, a forum content management system). There are lots of them around with some open source ones being phpBB 3, myBB and SMF. Amongst the paid ones, vBulletin is probably the best.

Search for them and their tutorials and you’ll be all set within a day. Godaddy isn’t probably the best place to host it because they don’t give you cPanel (I haven’t checked lately but that is supposed to be the best control panel you can get.) Plus if you have Fantastico De Luxe / SimpleScripts (available with lots of hosts), then installing the forums would probably be a matter of clicks.
