Question: I want to develop a small website that I can use for learning purposes and display it on web for people to see. I’ve used WAMP server for a while (and it has helped me a lot), but I want to take it to the next level and actually have a real website that a few people can visit.

Even though I know I have to pay for a domain name, I don’t want to pay for a host (at least, not right now). So I was wondering if it is better if:

a) I pay for a domain name (let’s say on GoDaddy.com), sign up for a free host service (since only a few people will be visiting the site) and if my website grows, switch (and pay) for a reliable host service?

OR

b) I pay for a domain name and host from one website (Let’s say GoDaddy.com)?

Like I said, I want to host my website on a free host…just for now and probably switch to a reliable host if my website grows. So,

-What are the advantages/disadvantages for registering for a domain name on one site and getting a host service on another website?
-What are the advantages/disadvantages for registering for a domain name and host from one reliable website like GoDaddy.com?
-Which option do you recommend?

Answer: Based on your registering domain name query above, why not try Godaddy.

If you are looking for a web hosting service or if you need “unlimited” hosting service, we recommend you try myHosting. If you are looking for a company with very few negative comments, then try search for MyHosting review to see what we mean. They also give free domain name, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, unlimited add-on domains, friendly Site builder and much more for such a low monthly price. You can get MyHosting for only $4.84/month.

If you need a VPS instead of just registering domain name, you can enter the Coupon Code below during checkout to get Up to 6 months FREE on VPS plans at MyHosting. If you want both Windows (Microsoft) and Linux Platform in one hosting plan, including unlimited diskspace and bandwidth, with 20 Exchange-based Email – then the coupon below takes $10 off the Premium myHosting plan.

If server reliability and security is not your concern, and you absolutely must go for a free web host, then try 000webhost.

However, if you need reliability, good speed, excellent support and lots of features, then go with HostGator. Don’t use GoDaddy, although they are good with domain names. Many people have bad experiences hosting with GoDaddy.

    GoDaddy sucks.

I’d recommend getting a real web host NOW…and, you can get a free domain with a hosting package. This way you don’t have to take time to move and transfer stuff to a ‘real’ web host when your site grows…you will already be ready for it.

A domain is gonna cost you at least $10 anyway and then you renew every year. With a hosting package it’s free for life (if you get a good host that is)

I got Hostgator over a year ago and I’ve never been happier.

A big factor for me was support. They were very responsive and helpful when I needed them.

I signed up through http://www.10bestecommercehosting.com and I was able to get 20% off through them. Their simplest plan, which will be more than enough for a regular website, came out to like $4 a month with the discount.
