    Yes, it’s a good idea. Distributing your information to intended recipients obviously serves to promote yourself and your site, and to a certain extent, you still have control over who you give your information to. With your Whois info exposed for all the world to see, you have no control over who has access to the info, and it could very well end up in the wrong hands. You could end up receiving tons of spam emails, direct mails, and unsolicited telemarketing calls.

    Private Whois is free with many registrars and you can always change your settings, if you decide to go public with your info, later. I’d say err, if you will, in the side of caution.

    However, going Private works best if you do it at the time of registration. Most registrars will allow you to opt for privacy at any time, but by the time you decide to do it, you’re info may have already been culled by unscrupulous list-sellers and spammers.

    I have sold several domain names before, the buyer said they got my contact info from a whois.

    I have a personal site and i hide my whois. Its just a false attempt to personal security

    its a good idea if you dont want people to see the address, phone number and email address you use to register your domain. If this info is going to be on your business cards or website anyways then no big deal.

    Oh and dont do what terminator69 suggested by putting "****" into the info instead..that is against ICANN regulations for registering a domain and the company that registered the domain for you will have to take the domain back if someone reports it as invalid information.
